Legacy Leadership Lessons: Roberto Clemente & Martin Luther King Jr.

On my global leadership path, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work with some amazing non-profits. One such organization is the The Branch Rickey Award, whose mission is to help at-risk kids. As a European transplant, I didn’t know a lot about baseball. But I have always known that one of my passions is to help less fortunate children. As if supporting the Branch Rickey wasn’t enough, earlier this week I had the chance to speak with Roberto Clemente Jr. Unlike me, many of you already know that Roberto’s father was hired by Branch Rickey and the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1956. As one of the first Hispanic players in the major leagues, Clemente went on to have an extraordinary career that ended when he was killed in a plane crash delivering relief supplies to Nicaragua in 1972. Today, I bet every single person that we are working with was at some point exposed to some level of change or transformation in their life. Some changes we found to be unpleasant or uncomfortable while others were fun, exciting, and worthwhile. If you happen to be one that never experienced any change as of yet, I would love to have a word with you! The fact is that a transformation is a specific kind of change that we need to understand thoroughly and tackle on a team level through consistently evolving paradigm shifts.
