Are You Willing to Risk Your Most Precious Assets? 7 Reasons Why (NOT)

Are You Willing to Risk Your Most Precious Assets? 7 Reasons Why (NOT)

Many of you have asked me to share a bit more about the Art of the Legacy Leaders and Legends. As I do, keep in mind that the foundation or the Art is You and Your Heart.

For over a decade, I have participated in the rehabilitation of survivors and the families of genocide, torture, war trauma and human trafficking, I’ve learned the most profound life and leadership lessons threaded with hundreds of colorful tapestries of cultures and words of wisdom.

A remarkable example I’ve found is how similarly three very different cultures, religions, and geographic regions define a person’s success!

Listening to the voices of a Native American Chief, a Sufi Master and a Buddhist Monk sharing their stories, I couldn’t help but smile and feel a universal truth of measuring our success from a thousand years ago that is still very relevant today:

I. Raise a child or childrenOr simply help others to raise them well! Best part – you can start TODAY! (I’m not saying you can start to have a child today, but, hey, maybe you will 🙂 What a concept and great opportunity not only to help children to grow, but also to start to coach them early on to be competent, confident, and capable. Words and actions of support and encouragement will mean a lot to them as they are growing and gaining more life experience.

By praising their effort, modeling positive self-talk, teaching them self-encouragement, and loving them unconditionally, you can give a child the leadership skills that YOU use every day in business. What an amazing legacy! Big kudos to all teachers, coaches, and mentors who are willing to invest that extra mile when no one else is!

II. Plant a tree or treesInvest in your neighborhood, community and forge a green legacy for future generations to enjoy TODAY! In addition to the beauty, health, and quality of life that trees offer, we can’t forget the environmental implications we are facing today and in years to come. Daydreaming and playing chess underneath a 100-year-old tree is an absolutely priceless experience. Do you wonder sometimes what trees, parks, or mountains the voices of your children and grandchildren will one day echo?

“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago” ~ Warren Buffet

III. Write a book or books – Pass on your wisdom TODAY! You may not simply get another chance! When you are passionate about a topic (like I am about legacy leadership and legends), find ways to share your expertise with others through a blog post or email. I’ve always wondered why more successful athletes and business leaders that I’ve met do not write their own blog or book. It is an excellent avenue to establish yourself as an authority, expand your market and add tremendous value to others beyond your title, company name or award. It is an excellent avenue to pass on your legacy!

As you are exploring your own art of the legacy leadership or a legendary path, you may want to consider the following seven most precious assets worth (not) jeopardizing:

1. Name

” What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” ~ William Shakespeare

2. Legacy

“ I think the whole world is dying to hear someone say, ‘I love you.’ I think that if I can leave the legacy of love and passion in the world, then I think I’ve done my job in a world that’s getting colder and colder by the day.”~ Lionel Richie

3. Reputation

“ It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” ~ Warren Buffett

4. Integrity

“Be Impeccable With Your Word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak agains yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.” ~ Miguel Angel Ruiz

5. Character

“Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

6. Honesty

“Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

7. Peace of Mind

“Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.”~ John Wooden

Please share some of your experiences and words of wisdom from your own journey on the path of legacy leadership or in your own unique legendary way – I would love to hear from you!

Leave a Legacy – Legacy that matters! Be a Legend – Your legendary way!
